Chapter 3 — Fractions
Teacher Activity
Write the learning target on the board: "I can add fractions with unlike denominators." Briefly review what a denominator represents using fraction bars.
Student Activity
Read the learning target aloud as a class. Give a thumb signal to show current confidence level.
Teacher Activity
Model two examples (½ + ⅓ and ⅖ + ¼) step-by-step: (1) list multiples to find LCM, (2) convert each fraction, (3) add numerators, (4) simplify. Think aloud at each step.
Student Activity
Copy worked examples into notes. Highlight each step in a different colour. Ask questions before moving to the next example.
Teacher Activity
Write problems on the board one at a time. Invite students to the board for each step. Provide prompts ("What is the LCM of 4 and 6?") without revealing answers.
Student Activity
Attempt each problem on mini-whiteboards before comparing with the board solution. Peer-check and discuss differences.
Teacher Activity
Distribute the worksheet. Monitor student work, note recurring errors, and provide targeted prompts (not solutions) to struggling students. Pull a small group for re-teaching if needed.
Student Activity
Work silently on problems 1–12. Attempt challenge problems 13–15 if finished early. Flag any problems they are unsure about.
Teacher Activity
Reveal the three exit ticket problems. Collect responses. Preview the next lesson: adding mixed numbers.
Student Activity
Solve the exit ticket individually. Restate the four-step process to a partner before submitting.
Assessment Methods
Exit ticket: 3 addition problems with unlike denominators solved independently — no manipulatives.
